Tax forms, like many legal documents, are known for being long and confusing. Although they were written with good intentions, they tend to become more bloated over time as requirements imposed by lawsuits to close loopholes and new additions to the underlying code require more in-depth explanation. This is a process that doesn’t seem likely to change; the code won’t get shorter, and so the paper used by a single form is only going to get larger. This makes tax forms a huge drain on the environment, and one that isn’t easily remedied by printing less per form. Instead, eco advocates are turning to another alternative: IRS efile.
