Keeping Conversations Relevant to Usenet Hierarchies

Usenet is a huge library of information. Like all libraries, it needs a card catalog. In the case of Usenet, the catalog is a system of hierarchies that identify a newsgroup subject matter very specifically. When you are using the system, it is very important that your topics relate to the subject of the newsgroup. This is the way that the system remains useful for everyone. It is a rather self-policing environment, however, and most off-topic posts will be removed from a newsgroup if they become a problem.

Once Usenet became available to the general public in the 1980s, the amount of discussions increased very rapidly. Because of the broad number of topics being discussed, there needed to be some sort of organizational scheme. Today, that scheme is based on what is called a hierarchy. The USENET is a decentralized system, which means that there is no central authority that makes rules for it. There is, however, a group of people known as the Big 8 Management Board that controls the creation and deletion of newsgroups on the Big 8 hierarchy and on the Five Alternative hierarchies. There is also a specific process that users go through to create their own newsgroup. Use groups generally only need to be created when there is a very good reason for it. There are thousands of groups within the major hierarchies already, so most user needs are already served by one of the existing groups.
